A Muddy Trek Ahead of The Lakes 3000s Challenge & The Return of Question of Sport…

Hi Sunshine News readers,

While a lot of us were enjoying a more relaxed long weekend, two of our amazing Sunshine supporters spent their May bank holiday weekend out in the countryside raising funds for our charity.

Lauren Scobie, or, as some may know her, ‘Miss Newcastle Galaxy 23/24’, went out with her mum, Kerry, to take on the Cheviots Horseshoe Challenge to raise money for us. The money will contribute towards providing specialist and adapted equipment to our Sunshine Kids, helping to enrich the daily lives of children living with disabilities, additional needs and terminal illnesses in the North East.

Despite the perhaps less glorious weather, the mother and daughter duo, and long-term supporters of The Chronicle Sunshine Fund, battled through the elements and finished the challenge with a smile on their faces. We’d like to thank Team Scobie for their continued support for our charity!

The pair weren’t alone on their hike; they were cheered on and supported by some other familiar faces as a team of this year’s Sunshine Trekkers joined them as part of their training for the Lakes 3000s Trek Challenge which takes place next weekend (how has it come round so quickly!?).

The trekkers waded through mud, and one person in particular (Erin, our Events Coordinator, and the lead for next week’s Lakes Trek), realised quite how deep the mud was as she got her foot stuck! However, the morale and comradery got them through it and, once Erin was eventually pulled out the mud, they had a great time and the laughs were flowing.

Erin said that the atmosphere and team spirit created by the trekkers made the training so enjoyable, and sets great promise for the main event. If the practice run is anything to go by, the Lakes 3000s is set to be a huge success – let’s just hope it’s a little less muddy! We look forward to keeping you posted in the next couple of weeks!

In other event news, we are just weeks away from our 20th anniversary Sunshine Run and we’re seeing lots of people signing up! The 5K run will take place on Wednesday 14th June down by the Quayside from 6.30pm.

We have an Elite Wave for club runners looking to smash their PB with our fast, flat route, as well as the main Fun Run wave which can be ran, jogged, walked, danced or skipped!

We’re so excited for this event which is kindly sponsored by our friends at Stagecoach and, as always, we have lots of entertainment planned to get everyone in the mood and to create a fun atmosphere. This includes 99th Garrison who will be dressed in full Star Wars gear, Sing United Choir, a steel band, a warm up from Gym Group and post-run drinks at Urban Garden, with snacks provided by Greggs Association.

We are also thrilled to announce that our popular Question of Sport event is coming back for 2023! Hosted by Sky Sport’s Pete Graves at The Grand Hotel in Gosforth Park on November 16th, we’ll be bringing back our sports quiz plus lots of games, entertainment and auction. Watch this space as we’ll be announcing more soon!

We would also like to remind you of our lottery, where this month, on top of the chance of winning the jackpot of £25,000, players could also win a bonus prize - a trip to Center Parcs! Tickets cost just £1, and half of this goes directly to The Sunshine Fund. Find out more at www.thesunshinefund.org/lottery.

Thank you for reading – we hope you have another lovely bank holiday weekend!

Sophie
